Celebrating Optimism for UVM

After more than a year of frustration and discouragement for staff at the University of Vermont, we’ve recently found reasons for genuine optimism. First, UVM Staff United has announced a tentative agreement on a new contract, following 13 challenging months of negotiation, a formal impasse, and intervention from a neutral fact-finder. This breakthrough couldn’t come soon enough, as morale and retention have suffered considerably amid prolonged uncertainty.

Compounding this good news is the announcement of UVM’s next president, Dr. Marlene Tromp. After enduring a period marked by concerning administrative decisions, some of which I’ve publicly and sincerely criticized, I find myself feeling genuinely encouraged by Dr. Tromp’s selection. I’ve openly shared my disappointment with decisions such as forced resignations of beloved, long-term Student Affairs leaders and how recent enrollment strategies have strained our neighborhoods. These critiques stem from a deep affection for UVM, an institution that has profoundly shaped my professional career and is the alma mater of both of my daughters.

However, as we welcome Dr. Tromp, I’m concerned about the immediate wave of skepticism from some corners —  skepticism likely rooted in justified historical frustrations. It is crucial that we not impose unfair purity tests on Dr. Tromp or prejudge her based on the past actions of UVM leadership. From what I’ve learned so far, there is much to celebrate about her arrival. Her liberal arts background and proven willingness to stand up to what many perceive as a conservative, overreaching state legislature are promising indicators of leadership that aligns closely with the progressive spirit and educational values of UVM.

I had the good fortune to briefly meet Dr. Tromp when she visited the State House and our brief exchange left me hopeful. I shared with her the honest truth: that as a longtime staff member and neighbor who deeply values this university, feeling even this slight glimmer of optimism is profoundly meaningful. My sincere hope is that we collectively offer her a genuine opportunity to lead by embracing this fresh start with grace, openness, and renewed enthusiasm.

Today, optimism may have returned to UVM and that is something worth celebrating.
