Artist's Statement
I see myself as folk artist with attitude. I don't know how others see me (or what I do), but that's how I see myself. I grew up in towns so small you'd be hard pressed to locate them on a map of the Lone Star State. (If you think I'm exaggerating, try to find Georgetown, Forsan, or Big Spring.) I guess the point I'm trying to make is this: I didn't come of age in big cities where there are lots of art galleries and other centers of culture. Perhaps that's why I never thought of studying art to become "professional."
I've been able to draw from just about Day One. Unfortunately, however, for most of my adult life, I let this ability wither on the vine.
Every now and then I would make a picture just to see if I could still do it, but I never systematically produced large bodies of work. Then, in 1998, I got this wild hair and started drawing every single day. I've subsequently discovered that I have a special thing for oil pastels, even though I like to use other media as well.Lots of people find my pictures "weird" or "scary." I'm not offended by that. I've always been attracted to and intrigued by "the dark side" of life and human nature.
